Choose Henchman if

  • You want a Mac app instead of a terminal install and a config file.
  • You want the thinking to stay on your Mac by default.
  • You like the idea of a crew with names, faces and personalities.

Choose OpenClaw if

  • You want to reach your assistant from WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal or Teams.
  • You run Linux or Windows, or want to host it on a server.
  • You want to plug in the strongest cloud models.

OpenClaw made “text your AI assistant” mainstream: you run a gateway on your own machine, connect your chat apps, and message an agent from anywhere. Henchman shares that idea and takes a different route to it.

OpenClaw is a gateway for tinkerers

OpenClaw installs from the terminal with a one-line script, runs as a background service and is configured through files and a local dashboard. It connects to an impressive list of chat apps and to any model you set up, local or cloud. It’s free and community-run.

Henchman is a Mac app with a crew

Henchman is a regular Mac app. You hire henchmen, give them names and personalities, and talk to them in the app or from Telegram, Discord or Slack direct messages. They show answers as cards, like a forecast or a map, and the thinking happens on your Mac by default.

Which one fits

If you want every chat app under the sun, or you’re happy in a terminal, OpenClaw is hard to beat. If you’d rather install an app and have a private crew ready to talk to, Henchman is built for you.

Questions

Can I move from OpenClaw to Henchman?

There's no importer. Both use their own memory, so you'd start fresh with your henchmen and connect your Telegram, Discord or Slack bot again.

Is OpenClaw a bad choice?

No. It's flexible and widely used, and it reaches more chat apps than Henchman. It asks more of you to set up and run, which is the gap Henchman fills on a Mac.
