Typing is fine. Sometimes you’d rather just say it. Henchman has two ways to use your voice, and both stay on your Mac.

Dictation

Hold the mic button, or the right Option key while Henchman is in front, and speak. Your words appear as you talk, and when you let go they drop into the message box for you to send or tidy up.

Calls

Press the phone button on a henchman and you’re on a call.

  • Natural turns. It listens, notices when you’ve finished, thinks, and answers in a few short spoken sentences.
  • Interrupt any time. Start talking over it and it stops to hear you.
  • Its own voice. Each henchman can have its own voice, so the crew doesn’t all sound the same.
  • Approvals by voice. If a henchman needs a go-ahead it says so, and you answer, then confirm. Anything that can’t be undone is decided on screen.
  • Read replies aloud. Prefer typing but like listening? Turn on spoken replies.

The conversation is saved in your henchman’s thread like any other chat.

Honest limits

  • You add the voice models. Henchman doesn’t include or download them. Until they’re installed, a call won’t start, and the app says what’s missing.
  • Calls need spare memory. Listening and speaking run next to the model your crew thinks with, so smaller Macs may not have room for calls.
  • One call at a time. And routines wait while you’re on a call.
  • Not from your phone. Voice notes sent through chat apps aren’t understood yet.
  • Speed depends on your Mac. Newer Macs with more memory answer faster.

Questions

Does Henchman come with voices?

No. Voice needs speech models that you add to your Mac, alongside the model your crew thinks with. Henchman's settings show what's installed and what's missing.

Does my voice get uploaded anywhere?

No. Your speech is turned into text on your Mac, and the replies are spoken on your Mac. No audio is sent to an AI company.

Can I interrupt a henchman mid-sentence?

Yes. Start talking while it's speaking and it stops to listen.
